Subscribing To My Blog

March 9th, 2010

I had a wonderful conversation with “Leslie” this morning. We were talking about the fears people have of ’subscribing’ to a blog. (See the word SUBSCRIBE over to the right) I mentioned to her that while I love my website, and really enjoy writing in my blog and answering questions in the forum, I’m afraid that some people are well, still afraid.

I shared with her the fact that I have, unsolicited, subscribed my entire family and nearly every friend I have! (They forgive me, of course, and to my knowledge have not yet ‘unsubscribed!’) Anyway, “Leslie” and I concluded that I should BLOG about it.

CONCERNS:

1) The author will ’sell’ your email address

2) You will no longer be anonymous

3) Your privacy will be invaded

4) You’ll be bombarded with emails from said Blogger.

THE TRUTH:

Nothing could be further from the truth. You can subscribe and unsubscribe as often as you’d like, and I’ll never even know! (There goes my theory about thinking the family is all still subscribed) It’s true, though. I would love for you to sign up for notifications, but if it drives you crazy, UNsubscribe. As for selling email addresses…no way. Truth is, I won’t even know your email address. You remain anonymous. You’ll always maintain your privacy AND anonymity as far as my blog is concerned. I’m just glad you’re a part of it, and I hope you’ll tell all your friends. :)

New York, New York

February 27th, 2010

Temperature’s are still chilly up in New York, but my Design Team was on fire! I just got back from a whirlwind couple of days in the Big Apple working on styles and colors for my Fall Collection.

The Judy Crowell Spring Collection launches on April 2nd. Look for periwinkle blues, apple greens and graphite grays to walk the ShopNBC-TV runways that day.

As for Fall, I don’t know what’s more exciting …the styles or the colors. There are some beautiful eggplant purples, golden wheats, chocolate browns and ruby reds on the horizon. Scrumptious! We pulled swatches; cut and pasted detail elements; and, sized up fabrics. You should see some of the amazing new materials being developed due to high tech innovations. The look and feel of leather and suede without the high cost OR the expensive care treatments; the look and feel of wool without the itch; and, the look and feel of fur without any animal elements whatsoever. It’s exciting stuff!

Gemstone Fashion In Tucson

February 19th, 2010

003Amethyst Geode Turquoise Fashion is often inspired by colors found in nature. Judging by the extraordinary beauty of these gemstones, you can certainly understand why.

My husband, Paul, and I recently attended the Tucson Gem Show, the largest international gem and mineral show in the world. Your head feels like its on a swivel. You don’t want to miss a thing. Gaspeite, malachite, hematite, sugalite, morganite, opal (sigh), tiger’s eye, amber, lapis, crystal, ruby, sapphire, jade (oh my), fire opal, jasper, agate, coral, emerald, garnet (inhale), peridot, aquamarine, turquoise, amethyst, aventurine, diamond (exhale).

You name it (well, and sometimes you can’t! ha), it’s there.

As beautiful as the gemstones themselves are, the creativity they often inspire can be downright breathtaking. Rest your mouse on the photographs above to learn which gemstones were used for these carvings.

Spring Fever

February 15th, 2010

It’s been one of the coldest winters on record here in Florida (giving us a chance to wear something with sleeves for a change!) And, in other parts of the country, the winter storms have been brutal. My back aches for those of you still digging out of the snow banks! I remember those days well.Picture_26

So, if you’ve got a serious case of Spring Fever, gaze at the image above and imagine yourself on vacation in somewhere warm and tropical. Aren’t the colors refreshing? (I’m now on a jag to go to Bora Bora after renting Couples Retreat last night! Looks spectacular!)

My stylist, Connie, created this look using a cute clutch from the Judy Crowell Collection on shopnbc.com. Visit Polyvore to see where she found the other pieces to create “the look.” Have faith! Spring is just around the corner giving us more wonderful reasons to be inspired.

Chic And Sophisticated

How often do we anguish over the age-old monologue “I have nothing to wear?”  “What is appropriate for this interview; that business meeting; my luncheon?” “I’m bored.” “I need a pick-me-up.” “I feel out-dated.”

If you resemble this remark… heed the advice in the photo above from my Fashion Stylist, Connie. For the cute crackle-finish clutch, go to shopnbc.com.  Click on the picture, or visit polyvore.com for everything else.

Up On The Hill

February 3rd, 2010

Paul and Judy at SNOWMASS And, I don’t mean Capitol Hill… I’m talking about the ski slopes (much more interesting)!

I just got back from a week in Aspen/Snowmass. They desperately need snow, but the weather was beautiful!  While I was there (Fashion Scouter that I am), I thought I’d take advantage of the opportunity to look at style on the mountain. For those who are planning a ski trip, here’s what I noticed.

Ski outfit XIII-Ski outfit VI-Ski outfit XII-Black and white is still (and is always) popular. New, to me, though (granted, I haven’t been skiing in a couple of years), was the animal print. I must admit, I saw a lot of  it in the shops, but the only place I saw it on the slopes was in the lining of a hood..(cute little leopard-action).

Ski outfit V-Ski outfit XIV-Ski Outfit I -Vibrant color is important this year, too. Orange, purple, blues, and reds … and notice the helmets? I’ve never seen as many as I did on this trip. I’m inspired to indulge in one myself. Sexy, on the slopes, is a smart woman wearing a helmet!

And, then there’s your share of LOUD! You want to be seen? There are plenty of ways to make a statement this year. I’m just not so sure I’m that confident.

Whatever your pleasure, it’s pretty much “anything goes.” Me? I mirrored the way of the economy and wore a jumpsuit I’ve had for 5 years. It still fits; I still like the color; and, I already have all the matching pieces. Until next year, when who knows where we’ll be, don’t break a leg, and smile as you pass by the Mountain Photographer. A smile makes (almost) any outfit look better!

Looking Ahead At 2010

December 30th, 2009

In my quest to find what’s-up for Spring, I’m spotting plenty of patterns – Patterns in leggings; patterns in skirts; patterns in sweaters and even sweater pants. Check out these knits from Missonimissoni1missoni2missoni3

Designers such as Betsey Johnson, Hot Kiss and BCBG are showing that even members of the younger generation are embracing patterns while, using various materials, they’re adding an eclectic mix to the mix. fashion05fashion03fashion04

Notice, among other things, all the neutrals in these depictions. Grays, blacks and browns are being embraced by many designers for the upcoming season including 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Phillip Lim1How beautiful are these brown dresses from his collection?! Notice there’s pattern here, too. But, it’s the color on which I’m focusing.

Airport Baggage Claim

Originally uploaded by crowell.judy

The boots are cute. The suit is a good color. The tee is a great layering piece. The purse matches. With all of these elements, she’s got the makings of success. So, what went wrong?

As they say, it’s the thought that counts. She thought, “I’ll be comfortable.”  And, we’ll give her that. There’s nothing like velour loungewear for comfort (especially when you travel). But, my goal is to help you in your quest for style, so while she’s waiting for her bags, let’s examine what could have been avoided.

This is not an inexpensive velour suit. She spent good money on this brand, and it’s a great color. As we know, black is slimming. Where it goes wrong is how it’s accessorized. The white tee is just too long. If you’re going to wear a short jacket over a long tee, don’t let the tee ride much more than an inch or two below the jacket. This look is sloppy, and it cuts her up in too many places. As a result, she looks shorter and heavier than she needs to.

Speaking of cutting the body in too many places, tucking the pants into her boots doesn’t help. She’s drawn a horizontal line at the top of her boots cutting her legs at the widest part, the calf. A horizontal line cuts her again at the bottom of the tee shirt right across her hips. And, a third horizontal line, the bottom of the jacket, cuts her once more at the waist. If she’d tucked the tee in, the black of the jacket would have extended into the black of the pants, and the only visual place she would cut the body is at the top of the boot.

Always check the full-length mirror before leaving the house, and try a couple of different ways of arranging all the pieces.  A better combination of these very same elements could have made this outfit a head-turner.
