Fall Trends To Suit You

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

A dear friend of mine, Michelle Phillips (who has a beauty segment on local talk shows around the country), asked me to offer some fall fashion advice to women in that 12 – 14 size range. She said, “You know, not all of us are sure what trends are right for us. We’d love to be fashionable, but we need to know what’s appropriate. Being a Trend Forecaster, can you help me out with this?”

I thought it was a great question, and I’ve decided to share my thoughts with you here. (She’s also posted them on her website: www.mindbeautyspirit.com)

1) Don’t be afraid of bright colors. The strong jewel tones and citrus brights are hot commodities this fall, and those colors do wonders to brighten up your face. (They are also easy to pair with dark pants or skirts for a sleek silhouette below the waist)
2) Dresses. The importance of the dress carries from summer on into fall this year and can offer a slenderizing physique. (Think 60’s style popularity featured on “Mad Men”) Just be careful with the pervasive wide belt. It can cut you right in two and exaggerate a wide waistline. Not all dresses look best belted (even the ones that COME with a belt!)
3) Denim. The jean jacket is back, and there are more popular jeans styles than ever (high-waisted, low-waisted, cuffed, boot-cut, boyfriend). Embrace denim, but be wary of the acid-washed, wholly variety. Always the most flattering, regardless of your size, is dark denim…. and it can be dressed up or down.
4) Jewelry. One of the easiest ways (especially on a tight budget) to update your wardrobe is with sterling silver. It’s affordable; it’s a long-lasting investment; and it’s bright and cheerful. You can layer your necklaces, or a multitude of cuff bracelets, without breaking the bank, and that trend looks great on every sized woman.
5) We’re starting to see an influx of patterns again for fall … argyle, plaid, floral, animal … and that can be scary regardless of your size. If you don’t want to be covered head to toe in leopard, choose interesting tone-on-tone “textures” instead. If you want to introduce patterns without too much commitment? Go with scarves. Tied at the neck or wrapped around the handle of a handbag, the look is chic.
6) The jacket is back! (Many of us who ditched them last year because they sat in our closet for too long are kicking ourselves.) Good news for those of us in that 12-14 size range is that they cover a multitude of sins. Look for the “boyfriend” jacket which has the longer silhouette. It covers the hips, gives us a waist and flatters the figure no matter what our shape.

Denim Does Dallas…and New York And Miami and L.A….

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

We’re having a love affair again with the jean jacket. (Yay!)

I, for one, was so sad when this useful, seasonless, go-anywhere staple ended up in magazines’ “LOSE,” “OUT” or “STORE” columns. I refused. I had accumulated them over many years, and appreciated each one for a different feature!  Beaded, plain, fitted, loose, gray, white, blue (of course) and even ones with fur and faux fur collars. I LOVE THEM! And, they’re back for Fall.

So, what’s new and updated about them? Wear your jean jacket over your …. well, your other jean jacket! (if you’re 30-something or younger anyway). And, check out the jean jacket on the cover of LUCKY Magazine over a shimmery cocktail dress! (And, we were told to let these precious things GO!) Here’s a thought. If you didn’t hang onto yours, run, don’t walk, to your nearest upscale consignment shop. There may still be a bargain out there somewhere on these denim delights.

Summer Inspiration ‘10

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Thanks to the World Fashion Council, I’ve discovered some pretty inspirations for the hot summer months ahead.  The hues are neutral and soft. Pare them with linens, whites and khakis. Bold but featherweight necklaces are a nice finishing touch to plain tunics, and any floral or animal print accents will add flair.

When it comes to those girly, feminine styles, baby doll tops are airy and cool. Combined with bermuda shorts or straight leg jeans, you’ll avoid looking as if you’re expecting. But, if you ARE expecting, it’s also the perfect, flattering silhouette.

Notice, too, the summer inspiration below borrowed from the trench. Shown sleeveless and short; belted and layered, this is safari style at its most stylish!

I just happened to purchase a top the other day with long ties in the front. It’s a bit bohemian, really. But, see how this same safari blouse is adorned with ties on the side. Look for that fun detail on clothes all summer long.

Fresh And New

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Have you noticed the importance of pastel colors for Spring 2010. Those shades are beautifully depicted in my new fashion pieces premiering on ShopNBC next week. There are soft pinks, pistaccio greens, and dove grays in some of the prettiest jackets you’ll ever own. (I can’t wait for you to try them on)

Important, as always, are black and white. They’re as prevalent as ever this year. When all else fails, those ‘non-colors’ go with everything you own…. especially your dark jeans.

I’ll see you on ShopNBC next Tuesday, the 27th at 11 am and 10 pm eastern for great fashion tips and details about all the new styles. Which silhouette is best for your body?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

It’s time to let the cat out of the bag! You are now the first to see this Friday’s Today’s Top Value on ShopNBC! Do you love it?!

It’s my 2010 version of the original navy pea coat. This one is water-resistant and available in 3 colors: navy (indigo), lime green and silver… 3 colors and 7 sizes.

Just so I cover all my bases, I want to share the hours with you of when the Judy Crowell Spring Collection will air. First, though, to find the right channel, go to their website and at the bottom of the home page, click on Channel Finder. Type in your zip code, and click the button: FIND YOUR LOCAL CHANNEL. At that point, you’ll see if a cable company in your area broadcasts ShopNBC. On DirectTV, for instance, it’s on Channel 316. On the DISH Network, it’s on Channels 134 and 228. For Verizon, Comcast and others, use their Channel Finder.

Here are the hours using eastern times:  (1st hour) midnight-1:00 am;  (2nd hour) 8:00-9:00 am;  (3rd hour) 3:00-4:00 pm. If you happen to flip by at the top of any other hour throughout the morning .. 9 am, 10 am, 11 am (and there are still any jackets left ;) ) you’ll see me for the Today’s Top Value presentations, too.

Lucky Number – 13 Days, And Counting

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

The debut of my new Spring Collection happens on Friday, April 2nd on the shopping channel, ShopNBC! I wanted to give you a sneak peek at some of the styles of which I’m so proud. There are blazers like these to compliment your jeans, trousers, skirts and blouses. And, just wait until you feel the fabrics.

I’m proud to be introducing some of the coolest new materials thanks to advanced technology using polymer fibers. While they look and feel like leather and suede, they’re actually lighter in weight; require less maintenance- no dry cleaning!; don’t involve animals; and, cost significantly less.

And, to prepare you for those April showers and cool Spring nights, check out these darling water resistant jackets! The colors are fresh and flattering; the lengths are perfect to cover not just the hips, but other blazers and sweaters beneath them; and the material, a bonded poly satin, is machine washable! Not all of them are available yet, but if you click on these photos, you can keep track of them. As soon as they do become available, you can order them directly on shopnbc.com.

Spring Closet Cleaning

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

We set the clocks forward tonight, and the first day of Spring is only a week away. That means that Spring Cleaning-out-the-closet is not far behind. It’s time to analyze how you decide what to keep and what to toss.

Nothing says “old and tired” more than hanging threads, loose buttons, frayed edges (unless, of course, you bought it that way on purpose) or stains. Examine your jackets, your blouses, your sweaters; cut off those loose threads; sew on that button OR replace all the buttons with prettier, updated ones; treat and wash, or dry clean, stained garments. If the stains don’t come out, toss that item or donate it. (This is especially true of anything white including T-shirts. They can be the biggest culprits of underarm stains!) These small, inexpensive adaptations are sure-fire ways to infuse more life into your wardrobe and get more wear out of what you already own.

I’m not a huge proponent of this advice:  “If you don’t wear something for a year or two, you never will.” I honored that philosophy in the past and let far too many things go that I later regretted losing. If I still lived by that motto, I would have donated or sold many of my beautiful coats and/or wool sweaters just because I moved to Florida. Who knew that four years later I’d be traveling to Minnesota every month and would need those wonderful warm clothes? Replacing them would have been an expensive proposition!

So, how do you answer the question “Should I keep this skirt? This dress? This blazer? I never wear it!” Here’s a suggestion. Take a Sunday afternoon and start ’shopping your closet.’ Try on that dress, that skirt, that blazer in front of a full-length mirror. If it doesn’t fit any longer, then there’s your answer. Get rid of it. If it does still fit, then take a look at the hem. If you had it altered, would you get a little more use out it? Perhaps that would update it enough that you’d like it again. Just remember, there’s a big difference between unworn and unwanted. Even if it still fits… if you’re just plain sick of it, consign it or donate it to a worthy Womens’ Shelter.

One more thing… if your lifestyle no longer calls for ball gowns, and you’re holding onto yours on the off chance there may be some occasion to wear one again, consider this:       1) If you do get invited to another ball, you’ll probably want to buy something new for the occasion anyway, and 2) If you look on line, there’s probably an organization that accepts evening gowns and offers them to underprivileged young girls who, otherwise, couldn’t afford a gown for the Prom. You’ll feel good knowing your gown is being enjoyed again and that it’s having a really good time! :)

Spring Fever

Monday, February 15th, 2010

It’s been one of the coldest winters on record here in Florida (giving us a chance to wear something with sleeves for a change!) And, in other parts of the country, the winter storms have been brutal. My back aches for those of you still digging out of the snow banks! I remember those days well.Picture_26

So, if you’ve got a serious case of Spring Fever, gaze at the image above and imagine yourself on vacation in somewhere warm and tropical. Aren’t the colors refreshing? (I’m now on a jag to go to Bora Bora after renting Couples Retreat last night! Looks spectacular!)

My stylist, Connie, created this look using a cute clutch from the Judy Crowell Collection on shopnbc.com. Visit Polyvore to see where she found the other pieces to create “the look.” Have faith! Spring is just around the corner giving us more wonderful reasons to be inspired.

Chic And Sophisticated

How often do we anguish over the age-old monologue “I have nothing to wear?”  “What is appropriate for this interview; that business meeting; my luncheon?” “I’m bored.” “I need a pick-me-up.” “I feel out-dated.”

If you resemble this remark… heed the advice in the photo above from my Fashion Stylist, Connie. For the cute crackle-finish clutch, go to shopnbc.com.  Click on the picture, or visit polyvore.com for everything else.
