But, if it was never fashionable in the first place, why bring it back. Keep it old. Still have not seen someone in a jean jacket for over 20 years. Where do they wear these? Who wears them? Inquiring minds need to know.

My darling friend, Joan, writes: "I read all of your posts Judy. You are sooooo talented!! Not being "in the know", what is the difference between a "boyfriend" jacket and a "girlfriend" jacket? After reading your article, I looked up what a "boyfriend" jacket is on Bloomingdales and they also showed a "girlfriend" jacket. Ei Yi Yi. How do I tell what is what?"
Great question, because there IS such a thing as the 'Girlfriend' Jacket now, too. It's typically shorter in length, more fitted through the waist and frequently has 3/4 length sleeves. Some even have permanently rolled up sleeves lined in a contrast color or pattern such as a stripe. (See ShopBop.com's Girlfriend jacket)
The boyfriend jacket is more relaxed; usually longer through the torso; padded at the shoulders and, in the traditional sense, made to look like you borrowed your boyfriend's suit jacket and threw it on over your t-shirt and jeans to make it your own.

I find it difficult to understand the fashion of the jean jacket. I never see anyone wear one. I thought this ill fated fashion was buried. Now, someone is trying to resurrect it? Let it pass....

I enjoy reading the brilliance of Judy Crowell. I do not agree with Point 3 (Denim), but I think you realize by now my adverse objection to the jean jacket and denim in general. Let the jean jacket go.
Like your analogy in point 2 (Dresses) related to "Mad Men." Very contemporary.
You make exqusite determinations and provide a fashionable frame of reference. Keep it cool for Fall, but stay out of Denim.

Seriously? To me the jean jacket is part of Americana. You can wear it like a farmer if thats your style, but the fun of it is that you can wear a faded jean jacket over a sparkly top and look adorable. I recently saw Cheryl Crow in concert and she had the cutest sundress and chunky high heels (high fashion) and a jean jacket over top..and she looked "cool"
I have gotten some real nice compliments when I wear my jean jacket...and I wear mine with pearls!! LOL

Everyone has their own sense of what they consider fashionable. I have simply never thought denim in any form was stylish. I respect the opinions of Joyce and Shawn and feel both make salient points in defending their appreciation for jean jackets. I just never thought of them as fashionable.
I am not sure if I have ever seen a man wearing a jean jacket. Jean jackets for men may have gone out with the leisure suit. Two ill-fated attempts at fashion. Why attempt to resurrect something that never worked in its' original incarnation. If I can think of a worse look than a jean jacket, I will share it in this forum. Right now, I just can't think of anything that is less stylish than jean jackets.

James I disagree with you and agree with Joyce 100%. Jean jackets have always been in style and I think always will be. I happen to have a jean jacket myself and wear it in the fall when it starts cooling down. James I also disagree with you when you said there is nothing attractive or fashionable about women in Jean jackets. Judy Crowell owns one and she looks very good in it. If a Jean jacket can look good on someone like Judy then it can also look good on a man. These things just arn't for women anymore. At least I don't think so.
